Dear House 5B Families,
Vacation is here! We hope that everyone gets a chance to relax, sleep in and enjoy some extra family time 😊
Congratulations to all of our performers in Stringfest. It was an amazing concert, and our musicians have made so much progress from the start of the school year until now!
Students displayed some nice spirit this week with the different dress-up themes. The spirit bubbled over to the gym at the end of the day where the faculty took on the 7th and 8th grade hoopsters in a game of basketball in front of the entire Ahern population!

Academic Update:
- Math: Students continue to work hard on their Decimal Operations. While we may have tested this skill, we will continue to practice the procedures over the course of the next month or so. Coming up after vacation, we will be learning more about shapes...particularly the similarities and differences amongst quadrilaterals.
- Science: Student had a lot of fun this week practicing physical properties through our Cookie Lab! Coming up after vacation, students will continue exploring matter with some new physical properties!
- ELA: Students started working on how to craft “responses to text”. This sub-genre of writing is beneficial on assessments like the MCAS where you are given a specific prompt, and you need to find evidence in the text to support your claim.
- Social Studies: The students wrapped up Shays’ Rebellion by looking at and comparing some primary and secondary sources. We will be moving on to the Bill of Rights after the break!
Have a wonderful vacation!

Dear House 5B Families,
Happy Friday! It was a great 4-day week here at the Ahern!
Earlier this week, students attended a bullying and cyberbullying prevention assembly. This was presented by one of our interns, Ms. Linnehan, who works through the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center at Bridgewater State University. It was a great assembly where the students learned more about the difference between bullying and fighting, and how they may present in an online world. We are proud of our students for being thoughtful listeners throughout this assembly, and we encourage you to talk with them further about what they learned.
Please note that Term 2 ends next Friday, January 26th. We are asking all families to look into Power School so that there are no surprises 😊

- Science: Student have been learning about what matter is and what it is not. We will be getting back into the Science Lab to work on a lab “Where’s the Sugar?”.
- ELA: Students begin creating a Netflix-like trailer for their Book Club novels. They look fabulous! We also wrapped up our first drafts of our narrative writing. We’ll spend some time next week conferencing and revising to clean the writing up a bit.
- Social Studies: This week students began writing a letter to a family member as if they were a soldier in the encampment at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-1778. In the letter they discussed the weather, the leadership of General Washington, and some of the hardships they were facing.

Dear House 5B Families,
Happy Friday! We hope that everyone enjoys a nice long weekend. We spent some time this week talking about Martin Luther King, Jr. and the fight for equality, as well as how that fight has been waged in some way or another for hundreds of years in this country. We continue to try to foster an environment here at the Ahern that celebrates diversity and makes everyone feel welcomed and included. Each 5th grader spent time this week creating and decorating a square piece of paper showcasing their family’s culture. These individual squares will be put together forming a large “Culture Quilt” which will soon be displayed in the 5th grade hall.

Academic Update:
- Math: Coming up next week, students will start their work on Decimal Addition and Subtraction! This is always a fun unit, as we use our math tools and create math problems to go along with our work :)
- Science: Student will be jumping into our Physical Science Unit with our first scope packet, “Matter is Everywhere”. This is the start of a very hands-on unit that the students are sure to love!
- ELA: Students are wrapping up their narratives. How to end the narrative was our focus this week, and this is a tricky skill for 5th graders. They seem to be understanding the different strategies to try out, though! We are also concluding our Book Club unit. There will be a culminating activity next week where kids get a chance to showcase their novels, and hopefully, everyone will be inspired to read one of the other books presented!
- Social Studies: This week we learned about the Declaration of Independence a bit more, and we shifted our focus to the battlefield where George Washington got very creative to catch the British and their allies off-guard. We analyzed the painting, “Washing Crossing the Delaware,” and we discussed how not everything we see or read is necessarily historically accurate but rather an interpretation by a writer or artist that involves some artistic license.

Dear House 5B Families,
Happy New Year! We hope that 2024 is a great year for all of our 5B families!
It was good to get back in the swing of things at the Ahern, but nobody seemed to complain about the short week. The kids, and maybe the parents too, might be wondering if next week will be shortened due to the impending snowstorm this weekend. Will we get a lot, or will we get a little? Either way, the students are excited to see some snow!

- Social Studies: This week we discussed the Battle of Bunker Hill, the colonies’ attempt to unify with the 2nd Continental Congress, and we listened to some catchy songs. The first tune was about Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” pamphlet, and the second song was about the Declaration of Independence, which we’ll discuss in further detail next week.

Dear House 5B Families,
We will be presenting our toy donations next week to Seargent Allen and the Foxborough Police Department. It is truly heartwarming to see the excitement on the kids’ faces as they have been bringing in their donations, knowing they are contributing to a wonderful cause and brightening the holidays for many children in our local community. Please see the pic below of our generous collection!
Speaking of getting into the spirit, House 5B, along with the rest of the Ahern community has spent time this week decorating our doors. The halls look like a winter wonderland! All of the doors look fabulous, but they will be voted upon, and the winning door will get to pick the final theme for our spirit week next week.

Academic Update:
- Math: Coming up next week, students will show what they know on our Whole Number Multiplication and Division Unit Assessment.
- Science: Students have finished up their Invasive Species projects and will be learning more about Lab Safety and Equipment.
- ELA: Students are in the midst of creating some really nice narratives. They are really working hard to incorporate the concepts being taught in our mini lessons. Ask them about their stories! We will continue these pieces next week and after the break as well.
- Social Studies: This week we read and discussed “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” and how history is a story that is told and potentially changed over the course of time. While Longfellow’s poem is famous, it might not give readers the most accurate picture of what happened that famous night in April of 1775. Then again, who doesn’t like a good rhyming poem? We will start discussing some of the early battles of the Revolution next week!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear House 5B Families,
Thank you all for the MANY toy donations! It is so powerful for the students to see a collection beginning to help support our community. The Foxborough Police Department will be joining us towards the end of next week to collect the toys and talk with the students. Please continue to send in your donations of new and unwrapped toys if you are able! Please know that ALL toys donated will be gifted from our entire House 5B community (students will not be recognized for individual donations, rather the whole group will be recognized for working as a team in this).
Our wonderful room parents are helping us organize a fun day together before winter break. They have reached out to those families who are a part of our Ahern Friendship Directory. If you did not receive their email, please see their message below! Please note: All food donations need to be PEANUT/TREENUT FREE. Thank you!

- Science: Students will finish up their Life Science Unit Assessments and move on to learning about Lab Safety and Equipment.
- ELA: Students have been doing a great job in their Book Clubs. We should hit the halfway point of our novels next week. We have been recognizing what good writers do so that we can use those strategies in our own narrative writing.

Dear House 5B Families,
This Thanksgiving season, we are both so thankful for such a nice group of students and supportive families. Thank you for working with us as a team to best support our students!
You will be able to access your student’s first quarter grades online via PowerSchool as of the end of the school day today! Term 2 is already underway, and the kids are off to a good start.
We are excited to see many of you next week (virtually) for conferences. Because we only have about 7 minutes with each family, we encourage you to come with any questions or concerns you might have before we dive into your learner’s academic progress.
Next week, the students will be released at 11:42 Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. There is no school on Thursday or Friday due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
Each year, House 5B works with the Foxborough Police Department and the Foxborough Discretionary Fund to collect new (unwrapped) toys for our community members in need. If your family is able to, please help us with this cause by sending in a toy. We talked with our students about this earlier this week, and we are so thankful for the toys that have already been sent in! It is so important to us that we provide our students with opportunities to give back. If you are unable to contribute, please know that ALL toys donated will be gifted from our entire House 5B community (students will not be recognized for individual donations, rather the whole group will be recognized for working as a team in this).

Hello House 5B Families!
The students shared some stories today during Morning meeting about the veterans in their lives. It was so wonderful to hear about the connections that they have. We encouraged our students to ask questions and hear more stories of those who have served so that their legacies can continue to live on through others.
The first term in fifth grade has officially ended! We are proud of our students for finishing strong! Power School will be closed through the next week so that teachers can finalize grades. Grades will be available again on Friday, November 17.
Don’t forget to sign up for parent teacher conferences! Ms. Frazier sent the link for sign ups in her newsletter last week.

Hello House 5B Families!
The students did an impressive job during the Warrior Walk. Many laps were walked/run around the track. House 5B would like to thank Union Straw and Reflections Dance for sponsoring our two classes with some nice donations. Thank you to all of you who helped donate toward this good cause. We appreciate your support! Fundraisers like this provide students with fun and rewarding opportunities.
Speaking of fun and rewarding experiences......We are going on our first field trip of the year! Be on the lookout for a permission slip right down the road to Patriots’ Place! We will be going on Oct. 30 to do some cool, team-building activities. I hope we have a bit more success than the team that plays there on Sundays!
We would love some help reminding the students to have headphones available to them every day at school. Thank you!!

Hello Ahern Families,
It was a short week, but a productive one for sure. Students worked hard, but they also enjoyed playing outside in some awesome weather this week. The school recently purchased some new recess equipment which has helped get some good games going during our afternoon break.
The Warrior Walk is going strong! Thank you to all those participating!
